Rhythmic Gymnastics

Rhythmic gymnastics is a subdiscipine of gymnastics in which athletes work with five
apparatus - rope, hoop, ball, clubs, and ribbon - on the floor. Gymnasts combine flexibility,
strength, coordination, and artistic expression while completing various body and apparatus

skills.

In the recreational rhythmic program, gymnasts will learn various gymnastics skills,
fundamental movements with the apparatus, as well as participate in music and movement
activities. The goal for the end of the session is to create a routine to music using a variety of

skills that the athlete has learned over the course of the session.

The PRISM Program, developed in Alberta and used used both nationally and internationally,
is a recreational program intended for participants of varying abilities, including beginner
level participants to entry-level competitive gymnasts. This recreational program consists of 7
colour levels for athletes and coaches to use as a framework to progress skills while
emphasizing Gymnastics Canada’s Fun, Fitness, and Fundamentals Educational Philosophy.
Progress reports will be given to each gymnast at the end of each session. Coaches will
complete reports to indicate which skills the gymnast has “Attempted”, those they are still
“Learning”, and which are “Mastered”. A gymnast has passed a colour level when they have
mastered each skill in that level, and they will receive a certificate for each level they pass to
commemorate their accomplishment before moving up into a new colour level.
